Cheti Chand 2021: Celebration of the Sindhi New Year Festival

Hello readers, I am going to share today about my community Sindhi culture, tradition, cuisine and everything you need to know. Nowadays we love to learn more about religious festivals. Religious festivals are all about fun, getting to gather with family, authentic food and list goes on. However now in Covid pandemic its safe to stay home and celebrate cheti chand with family.

Spring has arrived, which means festival season has begun. Today, 13 April 2021, the Sindhi community around the globe is celebrating Cheti Chand, or Sindhi New Year. Jhulelal Jayanti is another name for the auspicious day, which symbolises the arrival of spring.

History

According to myth, in the 10th century, the large and fertile kingdom of Sindh was ruled by a cruel king named Mirkhshah. He threatened to convert the locals to his religion. Fearing for their lives and shattered by the constant threats, the community gathered on the banks of the Sindh River and prayed to their Gods. They didn’t shave or wear new clothes while praying, fasting, and singing songs in praise of God Varuna and after 40 days of nonstop prayer they heard a prophecy from the heavens.

According to the prophecy, Devaki and Ratanchand Luhana would have a divine baby who would cure them of their injustices. This baby grew up to become Jhulelal, the swing lord.

People there have seen a miraculous vision of the entire Sindhu River flowing inside the baby’s mouth. Mirkshah also tried everything he could to kill Jhulelal, but each time he failed. Jhulelal grew older and met Mirkshah, whom he transformed with his divine wisdom. Sindh was reborn as a happy kingdom.

Why We Celebrate Cheti chand?

Spring, also known as the king of seasons, is the time that most Indian cultures celebrate their new year. Cheti Chand is the day on which the new moon appears after a no moon day, according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

Cheti Chand symbolises the birth anniversary of Sindhi Saint Jhulelal and is even celebrated as New Year’s Day for Sindhis. Cheti Chand is a very auspicious day for Sindhis.

How We Celebrate Cheti chand?

A massive parade was organised in public to honour Cheti Chand.

Many Sindhis take Baharana Sahib to a nearby river or lake on this day.

Baharana Sahib is made up of five elements Jyot (Oil Lamp made of wheat flour and five wicks), Misiri (Crystal Sugar), Phota (Cardamom), Fal (Fruits), and Akha. Behind is a Kalash (Water jar) with a Nariyal (Coconut) inside, which is surrounded by cloth, phool (flowers), patta (leaves) and idol of God Jhulelal.

The ritualistic fairs, or Melas, are another important feature of Cheti Chand. Sindhi communities gather in a festive gathering to sing and dance to their folk tunes in front of Jhule lal idols. Enjoy delicious dishes such as Dal Pakwan, Sindhi Kadhi – Chawan , Taieri – Koyer, Alu Tuk, and Sai Bhaji – Pula. They also chant popular Sindhi slogans.

How To Celebrate Chetichand At Home?

During this time, we are not able to enjoy the massive fair. But we can celebrate this in an interesting way if you are not sindhi you can also celebrate with us. Nowadays technology connects us so search sindhi folk songs and hands up and dance. Trust me you don’t know the lyrics you don’t Know the meanings but you will surely have fun.

Next step food.. Food is an important part of any festival if it’s Christmas: Mac and cheese, easter:easter cookies, holi: gujiya so if you don’t know how to cook sindhi cuisine learn the sindhi recipe on youtube and surprise your family members with delicious sindhi cuisine. And watch tv there are many tv channels that show live sindhi fair.

We Sindhis greet each other with “Cheti Chand jyun Lakh Lakh Wadayun Athav” (Many Many Happy Greetings of Chetichand)

QUICK WAYS TO GET GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP!

Wondering how to fall asleep quickly? Did you know one of the main reasons people struggle to fall asleep is due to the things they’re doing or foods they’re eating before bed.

Here are some common things to avoid if you want to fall asleep fast.

1 . DO NOT GO TO BED IMMEDIATELY AFTER HAVING YOUR DINNER

You must give a gap of two hours between your dinner and the time you go to sleep. This is because your body doesn’t let you sleep until the digestion process is complete.

2. AVOID CAFFEINE BEFORE YOU SLEEP

Caffeine stimulates your brain and keeps you awake. So, drink it only when you wish to stay awake.

3. FOLLOW A STRICT SLEEPING ROUTINE

Sleeping at any time of the day can disturb your sleep at night. Follow a routine and sleep at the same time every day so that your body gets used to it.

4. TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM ELECTRONIC GADGETS

Staring at mobile phones, tablets or laptops stimulates your brain, and prevents you from sleeping peacefully. Keep your bed gadget-free.

5. DO NOT EXERCISE BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP

Exercising stimulates the body and keeps you awake for a longer period. Thus, if you want to workout, do it in the morning or at least 3 to 4 hours before you sleep.

I was also facing hard to sleep but this yoga practice also helps me a lot. It helps you to release tension and reduce anxiety, follow this super-simple technique and there’s every chance your next sleep will be peaceful.

1 . Lie down in your preferred sleep position
2 . Breathe in through your nose on a count of three & breathe out through your nose on a count of five.
3 . Repeat until you fall asleep. If you find the three to five ratio a stretch, then adapt what feels comfortable, but always ensure the exhale is longer than the inhale. Sweet dreams…
